The worst interview question for journey mapping is “tell me about your experience with our product.” It invites summaries, brand narratives, and rationalized hindsight. People give you opinions they’ve polished, not the sequence they actually lived.
The interview method that works is event reconstruction. I ask respondents to walk me through a specific recent episode: the last time they noticed the problem, the last time they compared options, the last onboarding attempt, the last support issue, the last renewal conversation. Specific episodes produce timelines; generic questions produce slogans.
My favorite prompts are aggressively concrete. What happened first? What were you using before? Who else got involved? What nearly stopped you? What information did you look for? What did you misunderstand? When did you feel confident enough to move forward? Those questions surface chronology, uncertainty, and tradeoffs.
